Something's a Bru-ing!

Here's a local spot in Santa Monica, California, that you probably haven't heard of.  We were lucky to have some local friends in town introduce us to Bru's Wiffle, a small waffle house located away from the popular Santa Monica Pier area.  I wasn't sure what to expect of the place, but when I looked it up on Yelp!, the reviews were positive with a 4 star ranking.

We met our friends on a Sunday morning for brunch to find the place pretty full of people.  Luckily, we only waited a few minutes to have a table open up for us to sit down inside.  As expected, the Wiffle menu consisted of mainly waffle dishes - from original concoctions like the banana split waffle or pina colada waffle to several variations of chicken and waffles.  I opted for "Dwight's Special" - a belgian waffle topped with two pieces of boneless, skinless crispy chicken.
"Dwight's Special"

I was pleasantly surprised to have the option for dark vs. white meat - of course, I chose half and half.  The dish was complimented with four sauces: hot sauce, maple syrup, ranch and a red sauce (ketchup I think...I can't remember LOL).  I like my waffle with syrup and my chicken with hot sauce, so those were easily the two that were used the most in this sitting.  The boneless chicken was delicious - it was not like greasy fried chicken wings but more like tasty meat with an outside crispy-ness.  Complimented by the waffle and syrup, it was a hearty brunch to get our day going.
Line outside of Bru's

As the morning went on, the place was getting more and more crowded.  It's not a large restaurant by any means - with tables tightly placed together from wall-to-wall to maximize capacity.  There were also a few tables outside on the sidewalk to serve a few more people who were willing to eat their meal in the face of the waiting crowd that was accumulating in front of the place.  By the time we left a little over an hour later, there were lines of people waiting outside to be seated.  It looked like we arrived there at the right time to avoid the Sunday late morning crowd.

Pin Stops Ranking: 3 Pins
A solid local place for breakfast or brunch.  Worth scheduling a meal if you are in town to visit Santa Monica.  It has a nice laid-back California feel in a beach town neighborhood.
